“This competition is very difficult and the level of skill from the competitors is incredible,” said Mark Heartt, dean of Trades and Apprenticeships. “I am very proud of all of them.”

Josh Belkin, a fourth year apprentice from Northern Lights College won the gold medal in Carpentry. Belkin will be joining Team B.C., and traveling to Moncton, NB in June to compete in the Canadian Skills Competition.

“This is also a selection year for World Skills,” explained Jamie Maxwell, Skills Canada regional coordinator for the Peace Region. “If Josh wins gold at Nationals, he can join Team Canada and compete in Abu Dhabi in October 2017.”

Other medal winners included Sage Halma from DCSS – Central Campus, who won a bronze medal in Gravity Vehicle; Kassidy Wood from NPSS, who won a bronze medal in Electrical Wiring, and Erykah Brown from DCSS – South Peace, who won a silver medal in Public Speaking.

“This event proves what an amazing partnership we have with our school districts,” said Heartt. “Without their support from their faculty, staff and administration we could not be as successful as we are. This shows the province that NLC is invested in our training, and we have some of the best apprentices.”

Twenty-six students traveled to Abbotsford to compete in the Skills Canada Provincial Competition. Congratulations to the entire team for doing the Peace Region proud.
