Calendar Description:
Early Childhood students will continue to increase their skills, abilities and knowledge in the care and guidance of children from infancy to the kindergarten years. Emphasis is on addressing diverse abilities in curriculum development and environments. Child development principles will provide the basis for program planning and implementation. The importance of parental involvement is also stressed.

Course Content:
  • Review of current accepted principles, concepts and theories of child development as it pertains to diverse abilities
  • Culturally/ Linguistically diverse children
  • Gifted children
  • At risk children
  • Challenges and opportunities for providing for inclusion in Early Education
  • Building partnerships and networks with families and support agencies
  • Recognising and monitoring progress

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course student will be able to apply the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and attitudes as they pertain to working with children with diverse abilities.

  • Summarize the historical perspectives and approaches regarding children with diverse abilities
  • Discuss and interpret current theories and research related to diverse abilities including pervasive disorders and giftedness
  • Identify developmental diversity in all domains
  • Explain the importance of early intervention
  • Compare and contrast assessment tools, data collection  methods
  • Examine the conditions necessary for effective inclusion
  • Examine strategies for the inclusion of all children
  • Identify means and processes of identification and  assessment

  • Assignments: 80 %
  • Participation: 20 %

Nature of Participation:
  • Teleconference and online students will be encouraged to participate in weekly discussions which will count for 10 % of the participation
  • The other 10% will come from the peer review evaluation of the group project
Writing Assignments:
  • 5 - students will choose from 3 categories of assignments - mandatory / academic and experiential
