WFTR 133 - Pesticide Applicators

Students will develop skills in the safe and effective use of pesticides, in preparation for the BC Ministry of Environment Pesticide Applicators Examination. This will qualify the individual to apply and use pesticides on public land, or private land used for forestry, transportation or public utilities. The course is for applicators, supervisors, project monitors and consultants.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course students should be able to:
-Explain the legal and ethical responsibilities of a pesticide applicator in preventing an unreasonable adverse effect and minimizing environmental exposure.
-Define the term pest
-Define the term pesticide
-Explain three ways that pesticides are named
-Explain how pesticides are classified according to target pest, chemical structure, and mode of action
-Define the terms active ingredient, carrier, adjuvant, and formulation
-Given common formulations, list the major advantages and disadvantages with their use.
-Give a common adjuvant and describe what it does
-List reasons for consulting a label
-Describe the 13 components of a label and the three use classes and interpret the precautionary symbols
-Given a label of a forestry pesticide, locate and record the poisoning symptoms, first aid, directions for use and precautions
-Given a specific forestry pest problem and a specific pesticide label, indicate whether the pesticide could be used and with what label limitations

-Calculate the quantity of active ingredient in a know quantity of product


Grading System: Pass/Fail


Passing Grade: Pass (60-74% 1 Year Certificate; 75-100% 5 Year Certificate)


Percentage of Individual Work: 100
