Calendar Description:
This course provides an overview of mining. Students are introduced to the modern mining industry in B.C. and local mining practices, including sustainable mining practices, the economics of mining, and the life-cycle of a mine. Participants will become aware of the variety of career paths available in the mining industry.

Course Content:

  • Introduction to modern mining in BC
  • Introduction to mined resources Canadians rely on
  • Overview of mining around the globe, including social and environmental concerns
  • Introduction to the numerous fields of employment and careers available in mining
  • Critical viewing and discussion of two short videos about mining: pro and con
  • Case study of a fictitious mine to be opened near Bella Coola, BC - review of stakeholders positions
  • Discussion of the many concerns to be addressed when considering opening a mine
  • Overview of the life-cycle of a mine
  • Introduction to the economy of mining - overview of the impact of each employee on efficiency, and impact of the global economy
  • Introduction to the geology of coal formation, and position of coal seams
  • Relation of coal deposit to market value and economy of mining in the local region
Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:
  • Describe how our current lifestyles are supported by resources extracted through mining
  • Explain why stakeholders in communities or regions affected by mining may have different attitudes toward mining
  • Describe the life cycle of a mine, and how it is linked to the amount of the desired resource and to other economic and/or political factors
  • List at least ten items in daily use that rely on resources accessible through mining
  • List at least five stakeholders in the region of a mine
  • List at least one social and one environmental concern related to mining
  • List at least five careers available within the mining industry
  • Explain briefly the role and challenges of mining in the local region
  • Identify different priorities that different stakeholders would have when considering a mine opening in their region
