WLAT100 - Welding Apprenticeship Level 1

This course is the first of three levels of the apprenticeship program. This eight week course focuses on gas welding, plasma cutting, air arc gouging, as well as stick and wire welding.

 

Hours: 240 (Lecture: 40; Shop/Teaching Kitchen: 200)

Learning Outcomes:
Students will be able to:
Use Hand and Power Tools
- fabricate drill, and bevel gauges
- grind, drill, tap, and cut mild steel flat bar
- lay out a full size shape
- cut structural shapes using power metalworking saws
Assemble, Ignite, Shut Down, and Maintain Oxy-fuel Gas Cutting Equipment:
- describe the correct procedures to assemble, ignite, and shut down a portable oxyacetylene outfit
- assemble, ignite, and shut down a portable oxyacetylene outfit
- maintain oxy-fuel gas cutting equipment
Perform Freehand and Guided Cuts on Mild Steel Plate, Sheet, and Pipe:
- identify the characteristics of an acceptable cut
- perform freehand cuts on mild steel plate and sheet
- pierce holes in mild steel plate
- perform freehand cuts on structural shapes and on round stock
- perform guided cuts on mild steel plate and sheet
- wash nuts off bolts and gouge weldments
- perform freehand cuts on mild steel pipe
Perform Cuts with Cutting Machine:
- perform cuts with a straight-line cutting machine using oxy-fuel gas
- perform cuts with a shape-cutting machine using oxy-fuel gas
- perform cuts with a pipe-beveling machine using oxy-fuel gas
Fusion Weld Stringer Beads in the Flat Position on Mild Steel Plate:
- identify the main factors in gas fusion welding
- describe weld faults in gas welding processes
- review the safe operation of oxyacetylene welding equipment

Fusion Weld Fillet Welds on Mild Steel Sheet:
- identify weld positions and joint design for fillet welds
- fusion weld fillet welds in the flat (1F) position on lap, tee, and corner joints on mild steel sheet

- identify main factors of SMAW

Gouge Using the Air Carbon Arc Cutting Process

Perform Cuts Using Plasma Arc

- assemble PAC equipment
- perform square cuts using PAC equipment

Gas Metal Arc Weld Fillet Welds on Mild Steel Plate
- identify welding variables for GMAW and FCAW on mild steel
- identify troubleshooting procedures for GMAW
- set up GMAW equipment using a DC constant potential power source
- weld stringer beads in the flat position on mild steel plate
- weld fillet welds in the flat (1F) position on lap, tee, and corner joints
- weld fillet welds in the horizontal (2F) position on lap, tee, and corner joints
- weld fillet welds in the vertical (3F) position on lap and tee joints
Flux Cored Arc Weld Fillet Welds on Mild Steel Plate
- weld stringer beads on mild steel plate using self-shielding wire
