Program Description

University Arts and Sciences courses and credentials are designed to provide an educational experience that prepares students for work, citizenship, an enriched life as an educated person, and to create a solid foundation for further study.

Students may register in a program stream, or they may register for individual courses that are scheduled during the Fall, Winter and Intersession semesters. Courses are offered using various modes of delivery, including in-class, videoconference, and online.

The Arts Certificate is the equivalent of one year of planned coursework. By taking a planned combination of courses, students may complete a full year of university-level courses and then transfer to a number of Arts Degree programs offered at universities or other receiving institutions.

Coursework within the Academic program also supports other College programs, such as the Alaska Highway Consortium on Teacher Education, Business Management, Early Childhood Education and Care, Education Assistant, Social Services Worker Diploma, and Visual Arts.

Career Prospects

The Certificate prepares students for continued Bachelor level studies at universities or other receiving institutions, continued studies in specific programs at NLC, continued studies in professional programs, or entry-level employment opportunities.

Transfer arrangements exist with universities, colleges and institutes throughout British Columbia. See the BC Transfer Guide.  Course transfer beyond British Columbia is determined on a case-by-case basis. NLC students are responsible for confirming admission requirements, application procedures, transfer credit, and graduation requirements at all receiving institutions.

Admission Prerequisites

To apply to the University Arts and Sciences program or to register for individual courses within the program:
* Prospective learners need to complete a College “Application for Admission” form. Admission forms can be obtained in person from Northern Lights College (NLC) Student Services or downloaded in PDF format from nlc.bc.ca/pdfs/application.pdf. A one-time application fee is required.

* Where available, secondary school and/or post-secondary transcripts should be provided to indicate that prerequisites for specific courses have been met.

* A. Domestic students must have official transcripts demonstrating the following English Requirement: One of the following with a "B" grade or higher: Grade 12 English, English Literature 12, English 12 First Peoples, English 050, or English 099. Alternatively, any university-level English course with a "C" grade or higher. Students who do not meet one of the above English requirements must complete the NLC Writing Assessment for appropriate course placement.

* B. International students must have documentation demonstrating the following English Requirement: An IELTS with an overall score of 6.0 or higher with no band less than 5.5. Students with a writing band of 6.0 or less are required to complete English 099 with a "B" grade or higher before or during the first semester of their program. The necessity for upgrading can extend the length of the program.

* Applicants who do not have secondary school and/or post-secondary transcripts that provide documentation of prerequisites should speak with an NLC Admissions Officer. In these situations, entry-level skills will be evaluated as required through the Writing Assessment, the Calculus Readiness Assessment, or other assessments.

Please note that where students are registering in University Arts and Sciences courses to satisfy requirements in another program, additional registration criteria may apply.
