BUIL 100 - Red Seal Upgrade

This course focuses on assisting the carpenter on upgrading their theoretical abilities to meet the standards established to challenge the Red Seal exam. The Red Seal program was established to provide greater mobility across Canada for skilled workers. Certified journeypersons and apprentices are able to obtain a "Red Seal" endorsement on "Certificates of Qualification and Apprentices" by successfully completing an Interprovincial Standards Examinations. This course will help prepare them for the exam.

 

Hours: 60 (Lecture Hours: 25;  Seminars/Tutorials: 5)

 

Total Weeks:  2

 

Prerequisites:

None, however it is recommended that students should have the required "time" to be eligible to write the Red Seal exam, in the case of apprentices - four years of training, and in the case of non-apprentices - six years of carpentry experience. Students can confirm their eligibility to write the Red Seal Exam by contacting the Industry Training Authority.

Course Content:
Review of all four levels of the apprenticeship program of the following units:
Unit 1 - Mathematics
- Fractions: adding, dividing, multiplying, subtracting, mixed numbers, reducing to lowest terms, improper fractions, changing fractions to decimals
- Decimals: adding, multiplying, dividing, subtracting, changing decimals to fractions
- Decimals of an inch: changing to fractions of an inch (1/16 minimum)
- Decimals of a foot: changing to inches and fractions of an inch
- Standard lumber sizes: calculation of lumber quantities, areas for decking
- Plywood: calculations in square footage
- Volumes cubic: cubic feet conversion to cubic yards
- Concrete slide rule: method of using
- Metric/Imperial Conversion
Unit 2 - Blueprint Reading
- Architectural drawing: reading of blueprint, noting views, relationship
- Sectional views: where used in the blueprint
- Standard symbols: materials, plumbing, piping, ductwork, structural, electrical, location on blueprint
- Dimensioning: conventions, symbols used in exterior and interior walls and partitions
- Doors and windows: location on blueprint, how they open
- Abbreviations
- Topography: land contours and plot plan, reading a plot plan, noting land contours, existing grades, finished grades
Unit 3 - Construction Layout
- Survey pins: location on plot plan
- Bench mark: what it is, purpose
- Batter boards: methods used for layout
- Excavations: depth regulated by site, sewer; underpinning; safety
- Footings: layout and methods of construction
- Concrete forms: types and construction methods of wall slab and column forms, types of form ties and shoring
- Keyways
- Door and window bucks: laying out and setting
- Types of concrete: pouring and curing
- Frame layout: laying out of floor joists, framing openings in floors, laying out of wall studs, laying out of partitions, doors, and windows
- Stud lengths: calculation of stud cutting lengths
- Calculation of length of cripples, backing, grounds, firesteps
- Stairs – wood: names of parts, formulas for stairs, use of steel square for stair layout, dropping stair stringer
- Stairs – concrete: methods of laying out
- Roof framing: types of roofs, parts of a roof, roof formulas, principles of square root used with steel square to lay out roof rafters, pitch of a roof, run of a roof
- Common rafter: use of steel square for laying out, step off method
- Gables studs
- Collar ties
- Struts
- Hip rafters: stepping off with steel square
- Jack rafters: stepping off with steel square
- Rafter tables on steel square: calculations of mathematical lengths, common rafters, hip rafter, jack rafter
Unit 4 - Steel Square
- Tables on square: octagon, brace, rafter, board measure, 100ths scale
- Slipping of steel square for similar triangles
- Use of steel square for scale
Unit 5 - Builders Level
- Types of levels: care and protection, setting up a level, use of rod, use of decimals of a foot

 

Learning Outcomes:
- To assist the tradesperson in the carpentry industry to upgrade their theoretical abilities sufficiently to meet the standards established by the Industry Training Authority to write the Interprovincial Red Seal Exam.
- It is expected that students will identify specific skills that require upgrading and that instruction will focus on those areas.

 

Grading System: No grade required.  This program is designed and a review to apprenticeship training and therefore is not graded.  There are no tests, quizzes, or assignments to be completed.
