COMM 100 - Technical Communication 1 for Geomatics

COMM 100 focuses on the work documents required by the geomatics / survey industry and profession. Students learn how to format and write routine letters, memos, and e-mail messages, specifically addressing work orders, claims and adjustments. They learn to write clear and concise sentences and paragraphs and make documents easily accessible through headings, lists, and white space. They learn how to avoid some common grammatical errors in their writing. They also learn how to give an informational oral report based on library and online research on a new development in their technology, as well as to prepare resumes and application letters. They write instructions and/or process descriptions for user documents. Students also learn to collaborate as part of a team to accomplish work-related communication tasks.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
  • Determine the purpose and audience for each routine writing situation
  • Select, organize, and develop information to meet purpose and audience needs
  • Write clear and concise sentences and paragraphs, and edit and revise writing to an acceptable industry standard
  • Make documents easily accessible by using headings, lists, and white space.
  • Use appropriate patterns to organize information in writing and speaking
  • Use appropriate email, memo, and letter formats
  • Give an effective oral presentation on a technical topic
  • Create, format, and integrate graphics in technical written or oral/visual documents
  • Collaborate as part of a team to accomplish work-related communication tasks
  • Produce specific documents such as technical instructions and informal reports
