EDAS 146 - Understanding Learning Challenges

This course explores the field of learning disabilities. The learning process will be reviewed with emphasis on information regarding children and adolescents with varying levels of learning abilities. Students will also examine approaches and strategies used with students to enhance learning abilities.

Learning Outcomes:
Overarching Learning Outcome:
The intention of this course is to familiarize students with learning disabilities and the challenges that students with learning disabilities face in the classroom. Students will also learn various strategies and methods for supporting the learning of a student with learning disabilities. A student who successfully completes this course will be able to:

- Support individuals with learning disabilities to enhance learning in the school or community
- Identify appropriate learning material and strategies to meet individual needs and goals
Specific Learning Outcomes:
A student who successfully completes this course will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:
- Identify barriers to learning
- Assess the unique nature of an individual’s situation and learning needs
- Assist in the preparation, adaptation/modification of curriculum materials and resources
- Apply appropriate strategies to support classroom instruction and learning
- Apply the principles of an age-appropriate, normative approach to individualized learning
