Course Content:
The two-day field module will introduce students to standards by which Oil and Gas facilities and leases are reclaimed and to equivalent land-use concepts. This module is subdivided into two one day segments.

Day 1 – Pre-Site Assessment: provides an introduction to health and safety issues relevant to field procedures, site evaluations including topography, soil classification, plant taxonomy, vegetation health and vigor identification and elements of a Schedule A Pre-Site Assessment.

Day 1 – Pre-Site Assessment:
– Present overview of expectations and review teamwork skills;
– Conduct on-site Health and Safety meeting;
– Conduct soil classification and identification skills; highlighting soil formation, soil horizons, hand texturing, Munsell colour, admixing levels, root morphology and soil restrictions.
– Define plant biology; highlighting plant anatomy, flora deterministic keys and plant life cycles.
– Demonstrate plant identification; highlighting ‘keying’ main species, weed identification, health, vigor and density.
– Demonstrate and conduct a Pre-Site Assessment.

Day 2 – Reclamation Assessment: provides a review of Day 1, reassesses site safety issues and introduces site re-contour and soil replacement, seeding and vegetation monitoring and elements of a Schedule B Reclamation Assessment.

Day 2 – Reclamation Assessment:
– Present review of a pre-site assessment, review teamwork skills and overview of a reclamation assessment;
– Conduct on-site Health and Safety meeting;
– Describe site re-contour and topsoil replacement; highlighting reclamation equipment and weed cross contamination prevention.
– Discuss and review seeding and vegetation monitoring; highlighting plant / seed stock origin, seeding and fertilizer rates and weed control.
– Demonstrate and conduct a Reclamation Assessment.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:

- identify common soil horizons, textures and restrictions
- use a Munsell soil color chart
- identify plant species common to the area
- use a pin locator
- interpret a well site survey
- gather and document data pertaining to pre-site and Reclamation Assessments
- apply equivalent land capability principles
- define the importance of stock origin with respect to seeding, fertilization and weed control equipment
- describe commonly used erosion control techniques and materials
