Calendar Description:
Learners in this course will be introduced to personality type theory and basic concepts of communications and conflict resolution. Learners will have opportunity to develop their own intra-personal (self-analysis) and inter-personal (cooperative interaction with other) communication skills. Factors affecting communication such as ethical, cultural, and gender issues will be discussed so learners can recognize these factors. Application of concepts will be encouraged through practical and interactive learning exercises. The course will also provide learners with an opportunity to identify leadership styles in the workplace, and will examine their own leadership style and strengths.

Course Content:
1) Demonstrate the ability to understand personality type and basic communication concepts
- identify communication concepts of sending/receiving, encoding/decoding of message and examine factors that influence the communication model (eg. environmental, cultural, psychological etc.)
- identify personality types according to the Myers-Briggs theory
- examine differences (strengths and drawbacks) in personality types

2) Demonstrate the ability to employ intra-personal communication skills through self-evaluation
- identify psychological defense mechanisms and common fallacies
- discuss constructive methods for handling defensiveness
- discuss perception and self-concept

3) Demonstrate the ability to develop and use personal lifestyle management skills
- analyse personal traits and personality type through self reflection/evaluation
- discuss stress and lifestyles management options, including the 7 Habits

4) Demonstrate the ability to employ inter-personal communication skills and conflict resolution in interactive settings
- define types of conflict and discuss options for managing conflict
- use interpersonal skills in interactive exercises

5) Demonstrate the ability to recognize gender and cultural differences affecting communications
- discuss gender and cultural factors in communication setting
- identify nonverbal communication cues in communication setting

6) Demonstrate the ability to identify leadership styles and examine personal leadership style
- differentiate between leadership and management
- examine different approaches to leadership and different leadership styles
- identify personal leadership style and preference
- discuss options for working cooperatively with different styles of leaders

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
