Calendar Description:
Plumbers, size install, adjust and service residential drainage, waste and venting. Advanced theoretical and practical instruction is provided to interpret blueprints, to install valves and fittings, join pipe sections, secure them in position and test pipe systems for leaks according to project specifications. Students graduating from this program will receive technical training credit for Plumbing Level 2.

Course Content:
Hot Water Heating Systems - demonstrate knowledge of hot water heating systems which includes describing and explaining – hydronic heating, advantages and disadvantages of hot water heating, heat loss, heat flow, terms, outside design temperature, conservation, heating boilers, fuel sources, boilers, manufacturers’ information, fuel supply, codes, regulations and permits, installations, safety devices, circulation systems, types of systems – identify system components, heat transfer units, heating installation practices – explain balancing systems, zones, zone valves – read and interpret blueprints, identify symbols and complete a project installing a hot water system.

B.C. Plumbing Code Regulations - demonstrate knowledge of the B.C. Plumbing Code Regulations which includes explaining – purpose, application and scope of code, terminology, materials & equipment, testing, related regulations – demonstrate size venting systems, ability to size a water supply and distribution system – design drainage and venting system for residential occupancy and a drainage, waste and venting system for a bathroom group.

Solar Heating Domestic Water - demonstrate knowledge of solar heating domestic water systems which includes identifying, describing and/or explaining – advantages and disadvantages, types, active and passive systems, transport fluids, collectors, energy storage, components, circulation of water, storage and explain workings of a gravity circulation domestic hot water solar heating system.

Rough-In - demonstrate knowledge of rough-in procedures which includes interpreting and identifying – rough-in books and manufacturers’ data, blueprints, install, drain, and supply piping as per guide – demonstrate ability to install backing for supporting fixtures and accessories.

Finishing - demonstrate knowledge of finishing methods and procedures which includes identifying and describing – types and uses of fixtures and accessories, use of finishing tools, plumb trim, installation and testing, sealants, codes, regulations, types and uses of trim and complete a project demonstrating an ability to install, service, and repair fixture trim.

Compressed Air and Medical Gas Systems - demonstrate knowledge of compressed air and medical gas systems which includes identifying, explaining and/or describing – uses of compressed air, relative humidity and dew point, components in compressed air systems, layouts, blueprints, identification markings, symbols, medical gases, inert gases, testing or brazing – interpret data and rough-in sheets and demonstrate installation of medical gas piping and fixtures.

Grade, Slope, and Pitch Calculations - demonstrate knowledge of mathematics related to grade, slope, and pitch which includes explaining and identifying - terms, grade ratios, calculations, codes and regulations, grade problems on pipe lines, liquid velocity in pipes and continuous grades.

Leveling Instruments and Tools - demonstrate knowledge of leveling instruments which includes explanations and/or demonstrations of – calculations for elevations, interpret elevations from blueprints, terms, calculations from rod readings, use and maintenance of builders level and laser levels.

Oxy-Acetylene Welding and Burning - demonstrate ability in oxy-acetylene welding and burning which includes – use of oxy-acetylene welding equipment, characteristics of acetylene gas, safety requirements and devices, maintenance of equipment, cutting and burning pipe and welding pipe joints.

Drainage, Venting and Codes - demonstrate knowledge of drainage and venting systems and applicable code regulations which includes identifying and/or describing – types of storm drainage systems, materials and fittings, catch basins, roof drains, area drains, back water valves, codes & regulations, calculations, combined systems, blueprints, designs and sketches, material discharge, grease and oil interceptors, sump pumps and sewage pumps and their equipment, manufacturers information, drain cleaners and equipment – demonstrate safe operation of power drain cleaning equipment.


Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Recognize, name and size grooved pipe fittings used on various pipe materials
- Demonstrate correct procedures to be used when grooving pipe using power operated or hand tools
- Simulating a residential gas line installation
- Layout, size, and sketch isometric style the project with reference to the regulations in the B 149.1 and B 149.2 gas codes, and the Plumbing and Gas Safety Services Bulletin and blueprints
- Install and hang the gas line using accepted practises and procedures outlined in the B 149.1 and B 149.2 gas codes and the Plumbing and Gas Safety Services Bulletin
- Test the installation for leaks in accordance with the B 149.1 and B 149.2 gas codes and regulations, and the Plumbing and Gas Safety Services Bulletins
- Identify, explain, and use appropriate equipment to monitor and test for the presence of gas in a building
- Recognize and name types of valves, and variations of basic designs: Ball, Butterfly, Check, Gate, Globe, and Plug
- Identify, list and describe pressure markings, and ratings of various types of valves
- Disassemble valves and state the following: name, where used, purpose, rating, seat, disc, stem, bonnet, packing terminology, and jointing method
- List and identify residential/small commercial types of hydronic boilers
- Locate and identify all parts or components of trim for hydronic boilers
- Describe the basic function of components and boiler trim
- Layout and sketch isometric style, size and apply regulations in the plumbing code and information in manufacture's rough-in book and blueprints, a complete DWV with double plumbing in basement
- Rough-in ground work using cast iron DWV with regard to correct interpretation of codes and correct installation techniques
- Using different fillers, braze, solder, and silver solder copper, capillary and mechanically T-pulled joints in a correct and safe manner
- Describe methods of protecting equipment from physical and mechanical damage when lifting
- Recognize and name different types of scaffolds and platforms used in the construction industry
- Identify and state the use and limitations of various types of drain cleaning and rodding equipment: suction plunger, water closet auger, sewer tapes, electric drain gun, power machines with cable diameters 5/16 inch to maximum size, compressed air, pressure water/hose
- Identify by name, grade, size and material the tube and tubing used for bending purposes in the pipe trades
- Demonstrate correct techniques and perform straight line and bevel cutting on mild steel plate and pipe both by hand, and with machines
- Demonstrate correct and safe filling techniques when filling
- Explain and demonstrate the removal of flux and slag
- Identify and use hand and power tools to construct and weld pipe brackets
- Identify and use hand and power tool to bevel pipe, prepare fittings to tack stage and assemble in a correct and safe manner
- State the formula for calculating the volume and capacity of regular shaped solids , tanks and cylinders
- List and describe the principles of Boyle's law on the behavior of perfect gases
- Calculate simple problems involving Boyle's law
- Define and explain the meaning of buoyancy
- List and explain the effects of temperature in a hot water system with regard to: density, solubility, chemical reactions, and expansion
- List and describe the effect of all terms pertaining to flow of water in a plumbing system: laminar, turbulent, velocity, friction, pressure, pressure drop, cavitation, equivalent length, and flow rate
- Define and explain the principles of direct current flow of electricity
- Define and explain the principles of alternating current flow of electricity
- Explain how detrimental effects of electrolysis is controlled in pipe trades applications
- Calculate simple eat loss through a typical wall
- State the application of pulleys in pipe trades
- Draw three views of a single line plumbing piping arrangement that consist of 45 and 90 degree fittings
- Define divisions of blueprints
- From drawings and prints recognize, interpret and explain views and drawings of a building
- Draw plumbing ground work to specifications using orthographic techniques
- Draw plumbing DWV stacks and branches to specifications using isometric techniques

Nature of Participation:
Complete a project demonstrating an ability to install, service, and repair fixture trim. Demonstrate ability to install backing for supporting fixtures and accessories. Demonstrate size venting systems, safe operation of power drain cleaning equipment and the ability to size combustion air ducts and apply regulations relating to air requirements.
