Calendar Description:
Introduction to Health Assessment provides students with the opportunity to learn strategies for gathering data related to a health history and a physical assessment of an individual. Interviewing techniques for individuals across the life span will be investigated, and the physical assessment techniques of inspection, percussion, palpitation, and ausculation will be developed. Fundamentals of assessing cultural perspective and psychological status will be addressed. Beginning analyses of findings will be practiced and initial clinical judgements made.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate proficient interviewing techniques for children, adults, and older adults.
2. Complete a comprehensive health history for a well adult.
3. Demonstrate proficiency using the physical assessment techniques of inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation. Palpation will be limited to surface areas. Deep palpation will not be attempted.
4. With assistance, modify assessment techniques for age and developmental stage, cultural beliefs, and/or specific history of an individual.
5. Document findings of a health assessment according to accepted legal principles.
6. With assistance, begin to analyze and interpret findings of a comprehensive assess of a well adult, making an initial clinical judgment.
7. With assistance, begin to assess the mental health status of a well adult.
8. With assistance, begin to assess the cultural perspective of a well adult.
9. With assistance, begin to adapt health assessment techniques for children and the well older adult.

Additional Comments:
A grade of C+ must be achieved in each of the theory component of this course. Lab performance will be graded Pass/Fail with a mastery level of B+ required for a Pass.

A supplemental examination for the theory component of this course will be available, based upon NLC policies.

Computer with high speed internet capacity and a browser of Windows XP Professional or Mac OS 10.5 or later
A PDA or iPod Touch, with G3 capacity is recommended.


Keys to Success:
Practicing assessment techniques outside of lecture and lab time is essential.
