Calendar Description:
Rig Technicians operate oil and gas drilling rigs. There are three levels of journey certification available (Level One, Two and Three ) and three job titles (Motorhand, Derrickhand and Driller) where apprenticeship training is applicable. Each level of certification confirms which jobs (positions) the journeyperson Rig Technician is credentialed to work (Rig Technician Level Three journeyperson is certified to perform all of the tasks of Driller, Derrickhand and Motorhand, Rig Technician Level Two is certified to perform all of the tasks of Derrickhand and Motorhand, and Rig Technician Level One is certifiied to perform all of the tasks of Motorhand.

Learning Outcomes:
A journey person Motorhand will be able to:
1. Operate and maintain drilling rig engines, transmissions, heating systems, diesel electric generators and motors, hydraulic systems and other mechanical rig equipment.
2. Maintain equipment logs and preventative maintenance records.
3.Monitor inventories of fuel, oil filters, lube oils, greases, and other items.
4. Under the direction of the derrickhand and the driller, supervise, train and work with floorhands and leasehands, insuring safe and efficient work
5. Participate in rig mobilization and de-mobilization


Knowledge:
General understanding of drilling rig components and the operation of each

Attitudes:
Able to work as part of a team

Skills:
Mechanical aptitude, good communication skills, organizational skills, leadership and management skills, good physical strength and stamina, good judge of distances and spatial relationships

Technologies:
Requires appitude and understanding of mechanical and electrical technologies

Passing Grade:
70%

Grading Weight:
Final Exam: 50 %
Midterm Exam: 25 %
