SOST 040 - Advanced Social Studies

Provides an analytic and critical approach to social sciences topics. The overall purpose is to encourage learners to explore society from many perspectives. It provides learners with a variety of conceptual tools to analyze and assess these perspectives. It also allows learners to assemble these perspectives and articulate a point of view. Finally, it enables learners to revise their points of view through experiencing the different values and cultures of other people.

SOST 030 Intermediate Social Studies or equivalent,

OR permission of instructor

Grade 11 reading level

Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:
- Demonstrate an awareness of some past and present forces shaping society
- Express different perspectives on these shaping forces: cultural, economic, gender, geographic, historic, legal, political, psychological, radical, spiritual, etc.
- Analyze and assess specific issue perspectives to build a point -of-view
- Express their point-of-view and identify changes in their views as a result of experiencing other social and cultural perspectives
- Identify sources of information from resource books, texts, periodicals, computers (internet, etc.), video and audio materials, and direct sources (such as interviews, surveys and observation)
- Extract, summarize and report information from regional, national and global maps; contour and relief maps; artifacts and documents; historical and contemporary media, art, literature, cartoons, etc.; and electronic media (internet resources, software)
- Interpret and describe details of latitude and longitude, scale and distance
- Organize information into notes, outlines, reviews, maps, graphs, tables, and research summaries
- Analyze information by finding main idea asking evocative questions, comparing main ideas with other material and sources of information
- Demonstrate communication through written summaries, short essays, papers, and presentation methods (graphs, tables, tape, drawings, posters, computer-based presentations, etc.)
- Clarify and discuss personal values with respect to social issues
- Identify avenues for democratic participation
- Establish hypotheses concerning values and bias
- Distinguish between fact and opinion
- Demonstrate the ability to comment on and question the material
- Identify statements that reflect consistent or contradictory views

- Demonstrate the ability to generate inferences from any sources
