Calendar Description:
This is an introductory survey drafting course where students will learn both industry standard manual techniques and computer aided drafting techniques using AutoCAD drafting software. Students will prepare both manual and basic digital maps portraying a variety of data themes using industry standard plan construction techniques. An introduction to common map and plan symbology together with map and plan scales will be covered. Drawing templates; import and export of digital drawing files and 2D and 3D coordinate systems used in the digital drafting environment will be covered.

Use of a scale and navigational protractor to measure distances, directions, and declination on maps and plans.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

- Create a set of industry standard field notes and field sketches
- Identify the parts of a map
- Use a scale to measure distances on a variety of plans and maps
- Use a navigational protractor to measure directions & angles
- Create text of varying heights according to industry standard drawing scales
- Create a scaled and balanced manual plot on industry standard size paper
- Describe the main concepts of the Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) environment
- Draw basic lines, arcs, and circles in the AutoCAD environment
- Explain the various components of a typical survey plan
- Explain the relationship of scale, plan requirements and paper size
- Manage CAD drawing files
- Explain fundamental CAD concepts including layers, text creation and editing
- Produce simple digital plans using CAD lines arcs circles and text
- Plot scaled CAD drawings
- Create and use industry standard symbols within the CAD environment to identify map features
- Perform CAD inquiries for length, area and distance
- Import and export digital plan data
- Create CAD drawing templates
- Create blocks with attributes

Assignments: Late assignments, lab reports or projects will not be accepted for marking. Assignments must be done on an individual basis unless otherwise specified by the instructor and submitted on-line.

Makeup Tests, Exams or Quizzes: There will be no makeup test, exams or quizzes. If you miss a test, exam or quiz, you will receive zero marks. Exceptions may be made for documented medical reasons or extenuating circumstances. In such a case, it is the responsibility of the student to inform the instructor immediately prior to the exam or quiz.

Ethics: NLC assumes that all students attending the institute will follow a high standard of ethics. Incidents of cheating or plagiarism may, therefore, result in a grade of zero for the assignment, quiz, test, exam, or project for all parties involved and/or expulsion from the course.

Illness: A doctor's note is required for any illness causing you to miss assignments, quizzes, tests, projects, or exam. At the discretion of the instructor, you may complete the work missed or have the work prorated.

Attempts: Students must successfully complete a course within a maximum of three attempts at the course. Students with two attempts in a single course will be allowed to repeat the course only upon special written permission from the Dean. Students who have not successfully completed a course within three attempts will not be eligible to graduate from the appropriate program.

- Loose-leaf field paper - Rite in the Rain, 1 package
- Tri scale with at least 1:100, 1:125, 1:20 1:25, 1:50 1:75 scales
- Navigational protractor
- 2 mechanical pencils - 9.5mm Pentel or equivalent
- Clear plastic straight edge (6")
- Engineering paper pad or gridded pad (imperial OK)
- Small stapler
