Calendar Description:
This course is a continuation of SURV 100 and will acquaint the Geomatics students with more complex and varied cases of surveying computations. Specifically, this course covers: omitted parts computation; integrated Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) closed traverse computation; control survey by methods of intersection and resection; subdivision of land parcels according to specific requirements; the geometry of simple circular curve; computation of layout data for circular curves using various methods, compound curves, reverse curves, problems associated with these types of curves; transformation of coordinates; calculations of areas of road cross-sections and earthwork volumes; calculations of dirt volumes involving large areas; slope staking; calculate vertical curve data for centerlines of roads.

Course Content:
- Transformation of coordinates
- Integrated control traverse including height traversing by trigonometric levelling
- Control surveys by intersection and resection methods
- Subdivision of land parcels
- Simple circular curves
- Field methods and procedures of circular curve layout
- Compound curves
- parallel and non-parallel reverse curves
- Road and highway surveys and layout procedures
- Areas of cross-sections of roadways and earthwork volumes
- Borrow pit and building site excavations

Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

- Perform missing parts computations in closed polygons and traverses
- Perform linear transformation of coordinates from one rectangular coordinate system to another
- Compute UTM traverses and trigonometric leveling
- Perform computations of coordinates of control stations established by intersection and resection methods
- Solve circular curve problems
- Compute data to layout circular curves by different field methods
- Solve compound curve and reverse curve problems and field layout of these types of curves
- Perform computations on subdividing land parcels according to specific requirements and stipulations
- Carry out calculations of areas of cross-sections of roadways and earthwork volumes
- Determine dirt earthwork volumes on borrow pits and building sites

Assignments: Late assignments, lab reports or projects will not be accepted for marking. Assignments must be done on an individual basis unless otherwise specified by the instructor.

Makeup Tests, Exams or Quizzes: There will be no makeup tests, exams or quizzes. If you miss a test, exam or quiz, you will receive zero marks. Exceptions may be made for documented medical reasons or extenuating circumstances. In such a case, it is the responsibility of the student to inform the instructor immediately.

Ethics: NLC assumes that all students attending the institution will follow a high standard of ethics. Incidents of cheating or plagiarism may, therefore, result in a grade of zero for the assignment, quiz, test, exam, or project for all parties involved and/or expulsion from the course.

Attendance: Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each session. Students not present at that time will be recorded as absent.

Illness: A doctor’s note is required for any illness causing you to miss assignments, quizzes, tests, projects, or exam. At the discretion of the instructor, you may complete the work missed or have the work prorated.

Attempts: Students must successfully complete a course within a maximum of three attempts at the course. Students with two attempts in a single course will be allowed to repeat the course only upon special written permission from the Dean. Students who have not successfully completed a course within three attempts will not be eligible to graduate from the appropriate program.
