Calendar Description:
This course will focus mainly on further applications and practice with total stations including the use of onboard programs and electronic data collection. In addition, the use of a compass for directions will be covered and differential levelling will be reviewed. Workplace hazards and safe working procedures will be introduced. GPS field procedures and basic data reduction will also be introduced with resource grade receivers.

Course Content:
- Review and continuation of note keeping
- Electronic data collection including different electronic data formats
- Basic overview of serial port communications
- Total station onboard programs for resection (free station), setting out, missing line measurements and code entry collection
- The use of a compass for directions
- Review of differential leveling with both automatic and digital levels
- Different methods and procedures for simple layout surveys will be introduced for construction projects.
(field labs allow students to process and present their returns in conjunction with other courses (SURV 113 Computer Applications 2 and SURV 111 Surveying CAD 2)
- Introduction of GPS field procedures and basic data reduction with resource grade receivers


Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion, students will be able to:

- Demonstrate the ability to use basic onboard total station programs including ‘Free Station’ routines
- Describe and determine magnetic declination, magnetic bearings and magnetic variation
- Use a compass to determine magnetic bearings
- Determine ‘true’ bearings from magnetic bearings
- Perform basic calibrations for total station horizontal collimation and vertical index errors
- Demonstrate observational, note keeping and reduction methods for traversing
- Demonstrate three procedures for typical building layouts
- Describe the parameters for serial port data transfer
- Demonstrate an understanding of workplace hazards and safe work procedures
- Collect, download and reduce electronic data in conjunction with industry software
- Explain the basics of the GPS for ‘resource grade’ or reconnaissance surveys
- Collect data and produce a topographic plan from raw field measurements
- Perform, assess and adjust a differential level loop

Care and Handling of Equipment:
Equipment procedures will be covered in detail as part of the course material.

Assignments/labs are due on the date and time specified by your instructor. Late assignments submitted within 24 hours of the due date and time will receive a 50% penalty of the total maximum assignment mark. After that assignments will not be accepted for marking and zero marks are assigned to them. This policy will be in effect unless prior arrangements are made with the instructor or assistant instructor. Assignments must be done on an individual basis.

Makeup Tests, Exams or Quizzes: There will be no makeup tests, exams or quizzes. If you miss a test, exam or quiz then you will receive zero marks. Exceptions may be made for documented medical reasons or extenuating circumstances. In such a case, the student must inform the instructor immediately.

Attendance: Attendance in lectures and labs is mandatory. As much work as possible should be completed during lab hours.

Ethics: NLC assumes that all students attending the institution will follow a high standard of ethics. Incidents of cheating or plagiarism may, therefore, result in a grade of zero for the assignment, quiz, test, exam or project for all parties involved and/or expulsion from the course.

Illness: A doctor’s note is required for any illness causing you to miss assignments, quizzes, tests, projects or exams. At the discretion of the instructor, you may complete the work missed or have the work prorated (i.e., an average is given according to your performance throughout the course).

Required: Calculator (more details will be provided during course introduction); suitable footwear and rain gear; field notebook (loose leaf type with 'waterproof' sheets); small drawing template; field vest and plumb bob
