This is a foundation course in Visual Fundamentals for both Art and Design. The class will focus on concepts around two-dimensional dynamics and the elements of Design. Students will acquire understanding and skills of visual composition, value structure, rhythm and balance.

Course Content:
- Learning the materials - Identification and the quality of tools, media and papers
- Basic hand/eye coordination
- Creating an illusion of pictorial space through the use of line weight
- Composing the page, balancing figure/ground relationships
- Composing and balancing an image using three values (equivocal space)
- Value scales
- Breaking down an image into pixels, using pencil
- Introduction to texture and collage
- Designing a project (individual and/or collaborative)
Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Apply the basic elements and principles of Art and Design, including composition, balance, harmony, rhythm, etc
- Demonstrate hand/eye coordination
- Translate an image into values (highlights and shades)
- Plan out and execute an idea through the completion of a project
- Discuss their ideas and to participate in group critiques
- Present their work in a professional manner
