The goal of the Alive program is to prepare a worker to recognize Hydrogen Sulphide hazards and save himself, as well as perform basic rescue during an H2S incident. The course is a combination of theory and practice with each student having to use detection equipment, don breathing apparatus and perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. On successful completion of written and practical examination, the candidate will be issued an H2S Alive certificate. There is a three-year expiry date on Hydrogen Sulphide Alive certificates.

-The learner shall be able to identify six properties, probable locations and health hazards of H2S and, given a case study, apply the seven-step Initial Response Strategy effectively.
Respiratory protective equipment:
-The learner shall be able to identify major components of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and supplied air-breathing apparatus (SABA) and, given appropriate equipment, put on and operate an SCBA correctly.
Detection of H2S:
-The learner shall be able to describe the use and limitations of detector tubes, identify major components of a hand-held detector tube device and personal H2S monitor and, given appropriate equipment and an H2S gas source, conduct the pre-use inspection and operation of a detector tube device and read a detector tube correctly.
Rescue techniques and rescue breathing:
-The learner shall be able to correctly demonstrate rescue techniques, using other learners as 'victims', and rescue breathing, using a mannequin, according to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada CPR descriptive guidelines.
