WFTR 110 - Confined Space Entry/Rescue
This challenging four-day course provides an in-depth practical exploration of the procedures and equipment that provide the foundation for safe confined space entry and rescue practices.

By using a combination of classroom lectures and field exercises, the issues surrounding confined space rescues are addressed by building on material safety data sheets, permits and other documentation. Full participation by the student in all exercises is essential in order to gain experience in using monitoring equipment, self contained breathing apparatus, victim packaging, harnesses and hoistering systems.

Course Content:
- Confined Space Awareness – overview of the various types of confined spaces, tanks, trenches, underground chambers etc. 2 hours
- Hazard Assessments and Responsibilities – recognizing hazards, assessing the risks and assigning responsibilities to the on-sire crew. 3 hours
- Ropes & Knots, Equipment – an overview of the equipment and the use of ropes and the various types of knots used. 2 hours
- Flammability, Vapour Pressure, Toxicity, and Exposure – how to identify the atmosphere of a confined space and assess the risks. 2 hours
- Ventilation – using ventilation equipment to clear toxic vapours from a confined space. 1 hour
- Breathing Management, Respiratory Masks – a overview of the types of breathing equipment used in confined space rescues. 1 hour
- Communication Equipment – training in the use of radio communication equipment. 1 hour
- Victim Rescue – an overview of various rescue scenarios, what equipment to use and the delegation of responsibilities. 3 hours

- Practical Application – using a confined space simulator students use the rescue equipment, breathing equipment and extraction equipment to actually perform rescues. The skills are practiced until victims can be extracted from the simulator within the allowed time. 15 hours

 

Learning Outcomes:

Students will be able to assess a situation, determine the protocol to be followed and safely execute a rescue procedure by following the strategies as taught in the classroom.

 

Grading System: Letters, Pass/Fail

 

Passing Grade: B (75%) on written, Satisfactory on Practical
