WFTR 118 - OFA III Renewal

A renewal course for current ticket holders. Involves 36 hours of classroom study and practice. Pre-reading of all material and all homework assignments must be completed prior to the first day of class. Students will write an entrance exam on the first day of class. Certification - 2 years.

Prerequisites:

Students must have a valid OFA Level III Certificate. Students must be 16 years of age.

 

Non-Course Prerequisites:

Students must pass a Medical Certificate of Fitness prior to certification (cost of medical is not included in the course)

- Circulatory and cardiac emergencies

- Bleeding
- CPR
- Patient immobilization and packaging for rapid transport
- Hard collar application
- Spine board securing for rapid transport
- Nervous system anatomy and function
- Head and brain injuries
- Management of head; brain and spinal injuries
- Multi-person direct lift and multi-person roll
- Anatomy and function of abdominal organs
- Types of abdominal and pelvic injuries
- Recognition and management of abdominal and pelvic injuries
- Review principles of immobilization
- Recognition and management of limb fractures and dislocations
- Review the priority action approach for all RTC and non-RTC patients

Learning Outcomes:
- Perform the priority action approach to the end of the secondary survey for conscious non-RTC patients and for patients in the first aid room. Each participant will be able to move patients to the supine position from either standing or sitting, with C-spine control. They will be able to explain critical incident stress and its impact on First Aid Attendants. They will be able to describe the role and duties of an Occupational First Aid Attendant.
- Participant will be able to identify and describe management of Occupational Dermatitis; assess, manage, identify the need for medical aid referral and complete documentation for soft tissue injuries.
- Participants will be able to identify and manage critical interventions of the airway with C-spine control for conscious patients and patients with a decreased level of consciousness. They will be able to demonstrate the use of suction equipment; identify respiratory emergencies and manage critical interventions.
- Participant will be able to identify circulatory emergencies and manage critical interventions.
- Participants will be able to describe the key factors in multiple casualty; describe methods of transportation for injured workers and factors used to make transport decisions. Each participant will be able to move a patient to the supine position, maintaining C-spine control from the prone position; prepare a patient for rapid transport, in the supine and lateral positions, in no longer than 15 minutes from the approach to the patient.
- Participants will be able to identify and manage head, brain, spinal, pelvic and abdominal injuries. They will be able to identify and manage diabetic conditions.
- Participants will be able to identify and manage upper and lower limb fractures and dislocations. They will be able to identify and manage environmental and electrical emergencies; common communicable diseases routes of transmission and prevention.

- Participants will be able to describe the general classifications of poisons and describe the priority action approach for poisoning and substance abuse.

 

Grading System: Pass/Fail

 

Passing Grade: 70% on both written & practical exam

 

Percentage of Individual Work: 100
