Calendar Description:
This course has been developed in conjunction with the Canadian Association of Geophysical Contractors (CAGC) to provide a petroleum industry training standard for low-impact seismic (LIS) line construction. It is intended for all workers engaged in seismic line construction activities. Topics will include: personal protection, chainsaw maintenance and handling, safe falling, limbing and bucking practices.

Course Content:
Topics covered in the course are:
1) Personal Protection
-Mental and Physical Well-being
-Personal Protective Equipment: head, face, eye, hearing, hand, leg and foot protection. emergency whistle
-Personal Protective Clothing: high visibility garments, inclement weather
-Emergency Response Procedures: first aid, crew communications.
2) Chainsaw Features, Manintenance & Handling
-Safety Features: front handle, rear handle, throttle lock-out, chain brake, chain catcher, muffler, spark arrestor, anti-vibration mounts, dogs, bar tip, safety chain.
-Basic Maintenance: tools and spare parts, engine maintenance, chain maintenance, guide bar maintenance, clutch and drive sprocket maintenance, frequencies and checklist.
-Handling: re-fueling, starting the saw, transportatin, operation.
3) Safe Falling Operations
-Site assessment
-Basic Falling: defining the falling area, escape routes, falling cuts, and wedges
-Falling Difficulties: Dangerous trees, windfall and bulldozed trees, catapults, snow and other dangerous conditions.
4) Safe Limbing and Bucking Operations
-Limbing
-Bucking
-Bucking Difficulties: log bind, side bind, steep terrain, windfall and bulldozed trees, windrows, and snow.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course participants will be able to safety and efficiently use and maintain a chainsaw. They will also be familiar with the PPE required during the operation of one.
