Calendar Description:
This program is designed for health and safety professionals with management/supervisory experience who wish to conduct internal (maintenance) or external safety management system audits. The program consists of a five-day training course and a practicum which consists of a full health and safety audit. The audit must be submitted within six months for review and approval prior to certification.

There are two auditor streams available for auditor candidates to select from as listed under "learning outcomes."

Pre-Requisites:
Internal (Maintenance) Auditor:
-Individual responsible for internal (maintenance) audit during three-year audit cycle
-Individuals who are safety professionals and have supervisory or managerial experience who are responsible for evaluating safety management systems on an external or internal basis.
-Completion of Safety Program Development Course
-Be an employee of the company requiring the internal audit
-Auditor application completed and received 30 days prior to course

External Auditor:
-Completion of Safety Program Development Course
-Completion of detailed history of the external auditor's candidate previous experience and education in the area of loss management and health safety (program development).
-Auditor application completed, received and approved 30 days prior to safety auditors course
-University of Alberta, University of Calgary, British Columbia Institute of Technology certificate or Canadian Registration Safety Professional designation
-5 years experience

There are two auditor streams available for auditor candidates to select from.
One is auditor candidates who desire to become internal (maintenance) auditors and the other is auditor candidates who desire to become external auditors. In the first stream, internal (maintenance) auditor candidates at the completion of the course will be able to perform internal audits on the company that they are employed by. In the second stream, the external audit or candidates are required to meet much more rigid criteria. They should have a more in depth knowledge of health, safety, and loss critical management systems as well as experience in supervisory or management positions. Certified auditors desiring to become external auditors must take the Petroleum Safety Training Program (PST) orientation and attend the one-day Petroleum Industry Auditor Seminar in order to be certified to perform external Certificate of Recognition audits.
