According to the BC Mine Rescue Manual, this course provides students with basic training in the rescue procedures to be followed in the event of an accident at a surface mining operation. This course does not lead to a provincial mine rescue certification.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course, learners are expected to:
- Explain the fundamental principles of mine rescue training
- Describe emotional stress in accident situations
- Describe mine gases: their occurrence, properties, effects on human beings, and treatment of affected persons
- Identify when to use oxygen therapy
- Identify sources of ignition
- Describe fire behaviour and phases, and products of combustion
- Identify explosion, rollovers, flashovers and back drafts.
- Classify a type of fire correctly
- Describe liquid and gaseous hazards
- Identify standard demand, and positive pressure breathing apparatus
- Identify electrical hazards
- Describe injuries caused by electrical shocks
- List and explain particular hazards of winter conditions, including avalanche hazards, travel on frozen lakes and rivers, hypothermia, cold-water survival, drownproofing, and wind chill
- Describe an Incident Management System, Incident Command System, On-site Activation, Incident Command Team, Secontors, and -Incident Classification
- Demonstrate proper storage and safe handling of compressed gas cylinders
- Show how to correctly use a fire safety lamp, gas-detector pump, Drager Tube, Gastec Gas Detector, and Electronic gas-testing devices
- Show how to use PPE for rescue in a fire
- Show how to use a hand held fire extinguisher, and dry chemical extinguisher correctly
- Demonstrate proper use of non-self contained and self-contained breathing apparatus
- Demonstrate proper inspection and care of self-contained breathing apparatus
- Show how to deal with broken wires and how to perform and/or respond to an electrical lock out
- Demonstrate proper skills in rescue rigging, including webbing, carabiners, knots, harnesses, lowering systems, belays, load releasing hitch, pulleys, raising systems, anchor points and systems, stretcher rigging, rescue on shallow slopes, lashing, tripod, A-frame, Kootenay highline system and high angle offsets
- Demonstrate effective participation in mock-rescue operations, including lifting bags, winch and winching, rescue from vehicles, cave-ins
- Demonstrate an incident/scene assessment, size-up, hazard assessment, and establishing zones
- Demonstrate a willingness to work cooperatively with mine rescue group members

Additional Comments:
To earn a mine rescue certificate, the participant must complete an additional provincial mine rescue evaluation, and "be familiar with mining conditions, practices, hazards and equipment", normally requiring a minimum of one year experience working at a surface mine.

Students must attend at least 75% of the lessons to pass this course.
