Description:


The ten-month Hairstylist/Cosmetology program at Northern Lights College follows the Milady's Standard Cosmetology training system. An international system approved by the Industry Training Authority (ITA) to train learners in the basic manipulative skills, safety judgements, proper work habits and desirable attitudes necessary to obtain licensure, and for competency in entry-level positions in Cosmetology or in a related career field. Learners will gain the theoretical, professional skills and knowledge both in the working classroom salon and in community based salons.

Admission Requirements:

Applicants will fit one of three specific groups:
  1. High school dual credit students - Grade 10 level completion that includes:
    Grade 10 English or English 030, or Grade 11 Communications with, 67% (C+) or higher
    Grade 10 Math (Apprenticeship and Workplace Math), or Career and College Preparation Math 030 Intermediate Mathematics, with 67% (C+) or higher
    Grade 10 Science, or Career and College Preparation Science 030, with 67% (C+) or higher
  2. Adults – Submission of a high school transcript indicating Grade 10 level completion that includes:
    Grade 10 English, or English 030, or Grade 11 Communications, with 67% (C+) or higher
    Grade 10 Math (Applications, Principles, or Essentials), or Career and College Preparation Math 030 Intermediate Math, with 67% (C+) or higher
    Grade 10 Science, or Science 030, with 67% (C+) or higher
  3. Adults – Completion of trades assessment:
    An applicant who does not have the above academic background is required to write an assessment in Reading Comprehension, Number Operations, Problem Solving, and Science; and achieve a minimum Grade Equivalent (GE) score of 10.0 or higher.

Career Prospects:


Well-trained hairstylists are in constant demand in every community. Graduates who have obtained their ITA Certificate of Qualification are qualified to secure employment in large or small salons, or they may wish to open their own business. The training and practical experience obtained in the Cosmetology program gives students the competitive edge needed to succeed in this industry.

The following career opportunities are available to program graduates: hairstylist, technician, platform artist, salon management, cruise ship salon operator, film stylist, instructor, inspector, examiner, and salesperson.

Additional Requirements and Supplies:
  • Application Fee and Trades Assessment Fee - if applicable. Please refer to the Tuition Schedule.
  • Once accepted, students are required to pay a non-refundable, non-transferable, non-deferrable deposit to hold a seat in the program.
  • Students will be required to purchase a cosmetology kit and textbooks. Please contact your local campus for further information.
  • Upon successful completion of the program, learners are required to write the BC Certificate of Qualification written examination, which is credentialed through the ITA and if they wish to pursue working in the province. Learners who have completed a formal apprenticeship will also receive a Certificate of Apprenticeship. Learners are responsible for all fees associated with the exam(s).

*Industry Training Authority provides the option for trainees who attend a cosmetology pre-employment training program to receive up to a maximum of 1500 hours of workplace training credit towards the required 3600 hours required to become an apprentice.

Recommended Courses: We recommend that students complete a SuperHost and WHMIS course prior to completion of the Cosmetology program.
