Calendar Description:
This course is designed for students who require greater ability with reading, writing, oral communication and listening skills. It focuses on increasing reading fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and writing sentences and paragraphs using a range of spelling strategies. Emphasis will be placed on personal and learning goals identified by the learner to develop English, study and learning strategies.

  • Read for different purposes
  • Reading comprehension; literal, interpretive and inferential
  • Basic grammatical concepts in sentences
  • Writing process: generate pre-writing ideas, revise and edit written work
  • Study Skills and organizational techniques

Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:
  • Increase word attack skills and expand use of context cues
  • Continue to develop vocabulary and remembering new words
  • Develop confidence and enjoyment from reading
  • Differentiate between literal and inferential meaning
  • Use consistent verb tense
  • Correctly use most irregular verbs
  • Use compound words, contractions, possessives and plurals
  • Use paragraph format:: topic sentence, supporting details and conclusion
  • Use dictionary for spelling and meaning
  • Continue to develop awareness of personal learning strengths
  • Work independently
  • Use time management skills to meet assigned deadlines
  • Use word processing skills to complete some assignments

  • Individually-paced learning. Completion time will vary depending on learner's skills and the number of hours in class.
  • Portfolios help learners see progress and develop strategies to better understand their own learning needs. Writing samples and lists of words they can read/ and or spell are examples of materials that are compiled, usually by the learner, with assistance if necessary.
  • Log books are used to develop organizational and study skills to track attendance and hours spent on studies, monitor appointments with tutors, and keep lists of learned words and phrases, etc.
