Provincial Level English is required for the Provincial Diploma and is recommended for further academic study. The course models the traditional academic English course, develops skills in the context of reading and writing about literature, including Canadian literature, from a variety of genres, and prepares students for post-secondary academic English courses.

Writing Assignments: The assignment load includes
  • 2 major essays - research and literary
  • 5 assignments related to the process of writing the research essay including development of draft thesis, working bibliography, formal outline, draft copy and revisions;
  • 1 oral presentation;
  • Several assignments involving paraphrase and summary writing;
  • Balance of assignments involve reading and writing about the various genres (short stories, poetry, drama, novel) as well as the elements in these fictional works, such as irony, characterization, conflict, and theme.
  • Students must understand and use the vocabulary of the literary tradition and continue to hone their skills of analysis and synthesis as the course progresses.
