Writing Exams
  • Avoid a final session of cramming before the exam since this usually only leads to an increase in anxiety. If need really exists, take a brief review.
  • Prepare intellectually by reviewing your notes, attending classes, and completing your assignments.
  • Prepare physically by getting a good night’s sleep the night before and leaving enough time before the exam so that you do not have to rush.
  • Prepare emotionally. If you have done the proper study preparation, you should feel positive about your ability to do well on the exam; and remember, it is just an exam. Do not put added pressure on yourself by thinking that it is more than that.
  • Arrive at the exam room early enough to find a comfortable seat where you can avoid being too close to distractions such as unprepared, panicking friends.
  • Pay attention to all instructions regarding the exam.
  • Look the exam over and became familiar with its format. Then, estimate how much time you will need to complete each section or each question and work accordingly, being sure to give yourself enough time to think about and plan your answer.
  • Ask your instructor for an exam outline and be aware of what to expect on the exam.
  • Write legibly; it is difficult to get marks if the examiner cannot read your answer.
  • Proofread all your material and check to make sure that all the questions have been answered.
  • Attend study skills workshops for further information on how to write a short answer, essay, and multiple choice exams.
