CALGARY – Keyera Energy Management Ltd, a subsidiary of Keyera Facilities Income Fund, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Northern Lights College, the Province of British Columbia, and Lakeland College with respect to the ongoing development of petroleum-related training and education programs for the oil and gas industry.
“This is a great example of how industry can work together with educational institutions and provincial governments to develop innovative career-based programs,” said Jim Bertram, Keyera President and Chief Executive Officer. “We at Keyera are very proud to be an industry leader in training and education and are excited about the opportunities to bring our Competency Management and Development System (CMDS) to British Columbia.”
Keyera originally developed CMDS as a training and development program for its employees as part of its commitment to a safe and healthy work environment. Since that time, Keyera, with the support of the petroleum industry, has worked with Lakeland College to develop College Certificate and Diploma programs in Alberta based on CMDS. Keyera is proud to be able to pursue a similar initiative in British Columbia with Northern Lights College.
“Our longstanding relationship with Lakeland College has played an important role in the evolution of the CMDS program,” said Owen Baker, chief inspector for Keyera. “Now, with Northern Lights College and the Province of British Columbia signing this MOU, there is an opportunity to reach more students which will further contribute to the development of a skilled workforce. That is something we all benefit from.”
Learners will have the opportunity to earn certificates in various specialties, including: Gas Plant Operations, Pipeline Operations, Pipeline Construction Supervisor, Field Production Operations, Pressure Integrity Equipment Assessor, Safety Leader Profile, Oil and Gas Mechanical Maintenance, Oil and Gas Measurement Specialist, Oil and Gas Instrumentation, Oil and Gas Electrical, Facility Construction Supervisor, Heavy Oil Field Operator, or Gas Distribution Operator.
“This is an important partnership for Northern Lights College and for residents of British Columbia. The partnership expands on the great work done in Alberta by Keyera and Lakeland College in creating a curriculum model that involves program delivery right in industry settings, with Northern Lights College certifying the work of an extremely capable teaching corps from Keyera,” said D. Jean Valgardson, President of NLC.
CMDS has been recognized by the Conference Board of Canada as an outstanding education and lifelong learning initiative that addresses the impact of workplace literacy and essential skills on employee health and safety.
