Education Council Overview

The Education Council at Northern Lights College is the sole decision-making authority for policies, criteria, and procedures concerning educational issues and curricular content of College courses.

The Education Council has joint authority with the College Board for evaluation of curriculum, courses, programs, or course credit for transferability from other institutions or other departments within Northern Lights College.

The Council has an advisory role to the College Board for other issues, ranging from mission statement and educational goals to the criteria for awarding of certificates, diplomas, and degrees.

Education Councils were created in 1994 through legislated changes to the College and Institute Act.

Membership of the Education Council at NLC is comprised of elected representation from faculty, support staff, and the student body. In addition, there are four administrative members appointed by the President, who also serves as a non-voting member, along with the council Secretary. Additional non-voting members may include a representative of the College Board.

The Education Council elects officers for chair and vice chair positions annually. Council meetings follow a preset agenda and decisions are recorded through formal motions. The Council observes Robert’s Rules of Order when situations require it.

Meetings are usually held on Microsoft Teams beginning at 1:15 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month.

A current Council membership directory, bylaws, submission procedures, and forms are available.

Meeting agendas and minutes will be posted to these pages regularly.
