Unsafe Work Investigation

If a worker employed by Northern Lights College has reported what they consider to be unsafe work and the worker is not satisfied by the corrective action or lack thereof s/he must inform the Manager, Safety and Facilities Services via email or in writing with the following details:

  1. The date and time of the initiating incident
  2. The details of the task being performed and the unsafe conditions
  3. The corrective action (if any) taken by the supervisor
  4. Why the worker is not satisfied with the action or lack thereof.
  5. What corrective action the worker considers will make the situation/environment safe to continue work.

The Manager, Safety and Facilities Services will if necessary will inspect the worksite and if necessary take corrective action to ensure continued safety in the mentioned work environment.
If necessary the Manager, Safety and Facilities Services will photograph, sketch and diagram the work area. The Manager, Safety and Facilities Services may retain tradespersons on behalf Northern Lights College familiar with the task to aid in the investigation. The Manager, Safety and Facilities Services may conduct interviews and/or obtain worker statements of other workers in the immediate vicinity.

The following people are required to be present during any onsite investigation and must be informed during the investigative process of all progress and findings:

  1. The worker that initiated the complaint
  2. A representative from the Joint H&S committee
  3. A designate of the worker if the worker is not able to attend the initial onsite inspections. This designate will not be privy to any emails or written results from the report with the exception of any published findings from the Joint H&S committee.

Once the investigation is complete the Manager, Safety and Facilities Services will deliver the findings of the investigation in a report to the following:

  1. The worker that initiated the investigation
  2. The Joint H&S Committee
  3. The worker’s supervisor
  4. The Director of Human Resources or HR Manager

If the worker initiating the complaint has not received the resolution desired then the worker must inform the Manager, Safety and Facilities Services via email within 24 hours and copy the complaint to the Director of Human Resources or HR Manager. Northern Lights College then retains the right to hire a third party of the College’s choosing to review the report to ensure that all reasonable measures of correction have been exhausted. Northern Lights College will the forward all of the findings to WorkSafeBC.
