Roles & Responsibilities

Supervisors*

·         Will be required to identify the areas of their facilities that are considered confined spaces that staff or students under their supervision may be required to enter.

·         Must ensure that all personnel under their supervision are aware of the hazards associated with confined spaces and are trained in safe entry, work procedures and site specific protocols.

·         Will maintain documentation of

o    Worker training for confined space entry procedures

o    Performance issues regarding confined space entry procedures or non-compliance

o    Remedial training

o    Unusual occurrences

Regional Facilities Director

·         Will provide assistance to Campus Administrators in identifying areas of their campuses that are considered confined spaces.

·         Will provide advice on alternative maintenance or repair processes if possible to avoid entry into confined spaces

·         Will provide advice on engineering controls to reduce hazards in confined spaces.

·         Will arrange for any air quality or materials testing that may be ordered by WorkSafeBC, other governing ministry or recommended by the Health, Safety & Environment Advisor

Manager, Safety and Facilities Services

·         Will provide assistance to Campus Administrators in identifying areas of their campuses that are considered confined spaces.

·         In conjunction with the Regional Facilities Manager will provide advice on engineering controls to reduce hazards in confined spaces.

·         In conjunction with the Campus Administrators, and Joint Health and Safety Committees, will help to develop and maintain safe work procedures for confined space entry

·         Will establish a rescue agreement with the local Fire Department or other appropriate organization if no trained personnel are available to facilitate a rescue from a confined space should the need arise.

·         In conjunction with the Campus Administrators, and Joint Health and Safety Committees, will the confined space entry program and procedures for effectiveness annually at minimum.

All Personnel

·         Will adhere to the procedures for confined space entry and safe work performing tasks in a confined space

·         Will participate in any confined space entry, work or rescue programs as required by Northern Lights College or as ordered by WorkSafeBC

·         Will participate in any remedial training programs as required by Northern Lights College or as ordered by WorkSafeBC

 

*For the purpose of this program instructors of programs where confined space entry can or may occur are also considered supervisors
