AME students receive special memorial awards

Alex Hoff and August LehmannDAWSON CREEK – Two students in the Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) program at Northern Lights College recently were named the recipients of special memorial awards.

Mitch Coté was presented with the Duane Sunderman Memorial Award, while Alex Hoff was the recipient of the Erich W. Lehmann Memorial Bursary/Scholarship. The presentations were made on Jan. 28.

The Sunderman award, valued at $320, is presented to an AME student who has a personal interest in working on helicopters, is in the second block of training, and is a high achiever in both practical and theoretical work.

The Sunderman award was endowed in the memory of Duane Sunderman, a 1994 graduate of the AME program. After graduating, Sunderman moved to the Northwest Territories, where he combined his AME certificate with his helicopter pilot’s license and worked as an engineer pilot. Sunderman died in a helicopter accident in 1995.

Mitch Coté and Billie Jo RandallThe Lehmann award, valued at $330, is presented to an AME student who exhibits high achievement in the practical skills of the program, shows dedication to safety, and exemplifies professionalism in the workplace.

The Lehmann award was created in memory of Erich Lehmann, who died at the age of 19 in a workplace industrial accident. Lehmann was as an exceptionally fast learner, and had participated in a Science Fair competition demonstrating lift co-efficients of various wing designs for which he received first prize for northern British Columbia. He had hoped to become involved in the field of helicopters.
