FORT NELSON — As part of the Province’s Year of Science activities, Science World British Columbia is bringing its zany brand of science to Fort Nelson from Nov. 15-20.
Fort Nelson schools and the Northern Lights College will host Science World and profile local innovators for a week of science fun, exploration and celebration.
School-based programs include Science World On the Road programming in local elementary and middle schools, and an Opening the Door networking event connecting young adults with local science and technology professionals to learn more about future career opportunities in science.
Everyone is invited to the Grand Finale Community Science Celebration on Saturday, Nov. 20, supported by the Imperial Oil Foundation. This free family event will be held at the Fort Nelson Campus of Northern Lights College. It is a community effort made possible through the efforts of NLC and a local coordinating committee of local leaders in science and technology.
Saturday’s event at NLC runs from 10:30 am to 4 pm. Included are the following special events during the day: Amazing Science Show at 12 noon; “Hot Stuff” game show at 1 pm; and Science Surprise Show at 3 pm.
“Through the Year of Science, the BC government wants to help families connect with the passion and exhilaration of scientific discovery, and profile the people and organizations who are bringing science to life in BC,” said Ida Chong, Science and Universities Minister. “These innovative community programs organized by Science World will help create a culture of innovation and research in BC that will inspire the development of new and improved goods and services demanded by the global marketplace.”

An event such as this is important, from an educational perspective, in that it can inspire people to look at pursuing studies or career training in an area of science. It is also important as a galvanizing force for the community, as the event involves the cooperation of individuals and groups from various backgrounds and interests.”
