General campus orientation sessions were held on NLC’s campuses with individual program and departmental sessions led by faculty, staff and volunteers earlier in the week.

The Alaska Highway Consortium on Teacher Education (AHCOTE) also welcomed a new cohort for its orientation on September 5.

Students enjoyed a free welcome back barbeque Sept. 5 with beef and veggie burgers and all the trimmings plus cake put on by the food services departments.

Student Services and related services such as the Bookstores experienced greater numbers of students than previous years with the Fort St. John Bookstore tallying up record sales.

This year a variety of organizations had an on-campus presence to meet and greet new students. Winners/Moose FM and Scotiabank were on-campus during the week offering student discounts for their goods and services. Chances Casino was on-campus Sept. 5 to publicize its job openings that may be suitable for students seeking part-time work. Northern Health was on-campus to help raise awareness about public health.

NLC’s Aboriginal Gathering Spaces were also busy with the Fort St. John Campus Aboriginal coordinator, David Christie, starting off weekly Soup and Bannock Thursdays on Sept. 4. On the Dawson Creek Campus, Aboriginal coordinator Theresa Gladue announced upcoming free Cree language lessons from Oct. 20 to Nov. 27.

Staff on both the Dawson Creek and Fort St. John Campuses also participated in an ALS Ice Bucket Challenge to help raise funds for the ALS Foundation. Videos can be seen of the challenge on NLC’s Facebook page.
