Course Content:
  • Study Skills:
    Goal setting, learning process/styles; organization; memory; reading/note taking; time management; study techniques; test writing; stress management; attitude and motivation.
  • Job Search
    Application forms, cover letter, resume; creative search techniques; interview types/questions/responses; employer screening; job selection; career management.
  • Communication Skills
    Communication process, styles, barriers; theories of organization; characteristics/implications and effects; interpersonal relations, listening, nonverbal communication; assertive techniques; oral presentations; handling difficult people; conflict management.
  • Technical writing skills
    Record keeping, log books, procedures, accident reports, and analytical reports.
  • Group problem-solving
    Group definitions, procedures/techniques for problem solving; effective group participation and leadership; team building.
Learning Outcomes:
  • The overall objective of Work and Study Management is to assist in preparing students for the demands of the classroom and the workplace.
  • Emphasis will be placed on practical applications in the following areas: study skills, communication and interpersonal skills, business writing, job search, team building and conflict management strategies.
