ENGL 051 focuses on practices related to effective technical communication, in both written and spoken formats, as utilized in the Canadian workplace. Students will analyze, assess and produce effective modes of technical and professional communications.

Introduction to Technical Communication
- Examples of technical communication
- The importance of good technical communication skills
- Style of effective technical communication
Modes of Technical Communication
- Letters, memos, and emails
- Informal and formal reports (short and long)
- Proposals
- Instructions and procedures
- Illustrations
- Professional speaking skills
Technical Writing Skills
- Tone, style, appearance
- Paragraph writing (unity, coherence, structure)
- Sentence structure
- Word choice
- Editing and revising technical communication


Learning Outcomes:
The learners will be able to:
- Identify examples of technical communication;
- Outline principles of effective technical communication;
- Apply principles of effective technical communication in a variety of written documents and oral presentations;
- Produce technical communication utilizing a variety of elements including text and illustrations;
- Apply revision and editing skills;
- Determine effective technical communication plans in various workplace situations and scenarios;
- Identify examples of weak technical communication and outlines methods of improvement.
