Calendar Description:
This course will introduce students to the environmental aspects within British Columbia and western Canada. This course will provide an overview of the petroleum and environmental industry and will present practical soil classification and reclamation basics.

Students must have certification for the following safety courses issued within 3 calender months prior to course commencement:
Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG)
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System(WHIMS)
BC Occupational First Aid (OFA) Level 1
BC Occupational First Aid Transportation Endorsement
H2S Alive! (including calibration and bump test of personal detectors)

Course Content:
Introduction to the program and the Petroleum Industry in Canada:
– General orientation and overview of course content;
– Overview of teamwork and conflict resolution in academic and work settings;
– Introduction to Who is Who in Oil and Gas?;
– Basics of the origin of hydrocarbons, sedimentary rocks and reservoirs; and,
– Brief history of petroleum industry, drilling, production and facility wastes.

Land Survey System:
– Identify systems of measurement including the National Topographic System (NTS) and Dominion Land Survey (DLS);
– Recognize and utilize the Unique Well Identifier (UWI); and,
– Introduction to using maps, survey and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to locate sites.

Understanding of Safety Controls:
– Hazard identification, emergency contingency plan, safe work plan and ground disturbance permit, working around heavy equipment
and site traffic;
– Daylighting: bonding mats, trenching, excavations; and,
– Encountering volatile or harmful buried material.

Recognize Access Issues:
– Identify land use category and notification requirements to occupants;
– Recognize the significance and consequence of working in proximity to facilities, pipelines, underground and overhead utilities; and,
– Receptor proximity and protection: i.e. surface water- silt fences, ditching, berms, surface water management, waterbody crossing, setbacks and riparian bio-engineering.

Recognize Vegetation and Wildlife Issues:
– Recognize increaser, decreaser and invasive plant species;
– Awareness of vegetation cross-contamination and cleaning of equipment;
– Sensitive, protected and at risk flora and fauna, fish and wildlife timing constraints; and,
– Traditional knowledge plant identification and information.

Introduction to Soil Classification:
– Define soil and describe components and processes;
– Identify Unified Soil Classification (USC) and Munsell Soil Colour Chart; and,
– Basic soil characterization and profiling.

Remediation Basics:
– Introduction to types and characteristics of site disturbances, adverse impact and/or affect resulting from on and off-site activities,
slope or element erosion, degraded watercourses and/or contaminants;
– Awareness of identifying areas of concern (ie. Electro-magnetic (EM) survey);
– Introduction to environmental drilling and groundwater well installation;
– Introduction to sampling tools and field screening equipment (monitors, meters), sampling methods; and,
– Laboratory services: sample supplies, chain of custody, hold times & analysis.

Reclamation Basics:
– Introduce soil stabilization and remediation including topography and processes of drainage and erosion, slope failure and bank
– Introduce elements of re-contouring, soil replacement and amendments;
– Identify common reclamation equipment; and,
– Define seeding requirements, suitable re-vegetation species and weed monitoring.

Introduce Regulatory Process for Reclamation / Restoration in British Columbia:
– Schedule A Site Assessment Requirements (Pre-Site Assessment)
– Schedule B Site Assessment Requirements (Post Site Restoration Assessment)
– Preliminary Site Investigation (PSI)
– Detailed Site Investigation (DSI)
– Certificate of Restoration (COR)

Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:

- demonstrate safe work practices as required to work in the petroleum industry
- practice teamwork and conflict resolution in workplace settings
- perform basic topographical measurement, mapping and GPS functions
- identify work hazards and appropriate safety controls
- define "soil profile" and identify vegetation species
- identify adverse impact due to site operations
- define basic reclamation and re-vegetation processes
- identify applicable regulatory bodies and pertinent standards for reclamation
- define pre-site assessment, post-restoration assessment, and certificate of restoration process
