This course builds upon fundamentals of site reclamation. The concepts and elements of reclamation are reinforced, and a more detailed and practical understanding of the techniques and requirements for soil stabilization, remediation, re-vegetation and restoration of upstream oil and gas lease sites are explored.

Course Content:
Reclamation Site Assessor training offers an introduction into the environmental aspects of site reclamation within the oil and gas sector in British Columbia and western Canada. The course will build upon the basic fundamentals presented in the Reclamation Crew Member course. Course topics reviewed include health and safety issues, policies and procedures, soil classification, plant identification and taxonomy nomenclature, reclamation equipment, site reclamation techniques, soil replacement, seeding and weed control and Pre and Post Disturbance Site Assessments.

• Review Safety and Contingency Planning: Emergency planning and hazard assessment

• Review Government Reclamation/Restoration Standards and Guidelines

• Define aspects of Preliminary Site Investigation (PSI):
Review proximity and crossing agreements;
Introduction to checklist for reviewing a Preliminary Site Investigation (PSI);
Introduction to Site Registry, Site Profile and Contaminated Sites Regulation;
Reviewing Historical Site Data (well file, tour reports or OGC data);
Introduction to Air Photo sourcing and interpretation exercise,
Other data sources, published reference material, geology, groundwater, etc.
Identify intrusive or non-intrusive methods of investigation;
Overview of site visits and interviews of individuals with site knowledge;
Overview of Qualified Reclamation Specialist (QRS);
Introduction to Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR); and,
Introduction to Pre-tenure plans and Aboriginal Relations and Archaeology.

• Define aspects of Detailed Site Investigation (DSI) and Site Remediation:
Introduction to checklist for reviewing a Detailed Site Investigation (DSI);
Introduction to site characterization and confirmation testing;
Review types and characteristics of site disturbances, adverse impact and/or affects resulting from on and off-site activities, soil and
element erosion, degraded watercourses and/or contaminants;
Review soil components and processes;
Define mechanical and hand sampling, test pit and excavation;
Identify environmental drilling techniques – Solid Stem, Hollow Stem, Air Hammer, Wet Rotary, etc.;
Introduction to vertical and lateral site delineation and decontamination;
Demonstrate and identify soil sampling techniques: discrete, composite, split spoon, continuous core;
Identify soil and groundwater sampling protocol : labeling, bags, jars, preservation;
Demonstrate surface water, groundwater, sediment, waste and stockpile sampling and preservation;
Review groundwater monitoring well construction, installation and protection;
Introduction to field screening tools: Electro magnetic (EM) Surveys, volatile organic compounds (VOC), electrical conductivity (EC
and acidity (pH);
Knowledge of laboratory characterization, completion of Chain of Custody (COC) and relevant sample holding times;
Describe remediation and/or reclamation standards and objectives;
Awareness of on-site, off-site, ex-situ and in-situ objectives;
Awareness of Risk Management, Natural Attenuation and Risk Assessment; and,
Group exercise outline of documentation requirements for technical report.

•Site Reclamation and Re-vegetation:
Review geology, soil formation process and soil profile characteristics;
Describe site topography and re-contouring requirements including characteristics of subsoil and overburden;
Explain methods of mitigating soil contamination;
Describe suitable re-vegetation species and describe autecology, mix selection and uses of native and non-native species in
Explain re-vegetation techniques and plant establishment on disturbed soil;
Explain invasive plant establishment, weed species control, vegetation monitoring and the Weed Act;
Describe and define the functions of commonly used reclamation equipment;,
Review of a Pre-site assessment and a reclamation assessment; and,
Complete group exercise identifying various plant species.

• Describe Government Reclamation/Restoration Standards and Guidelines:
Introduction to Certificate of Restoration (COR)

Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:

- identify hazards and safety controls associated with reclamation activities
- define reclamation standards in BC including preliminary site investigations and detailed site investigations
- identify soil and ecosystems properties and processes
- describe characteristics of adverse impact or effect due to site operations
- describe soil stabilization and remediation
- utilize skills learned to identify and describe suitable re-vegetation species and techniques, mapping and GPS systems
- identify the application for Certificate of Restoration (COR) process
- describe Environmental Site Assessment Project Management
