Calendar Description:
This course is focused on developing the student’s skills in an integrated coordinate geometry and drafting environment with an emphasis on MicroSurvey (2008) software. When possible, we will use field data from the concurrent Field Survey course. Students will become familiar with electronic data uploading and downloading and data processing. The student will learn traverse data entry and adjustment, importing and exporting routines, creation of drawing templates, Land title drafting standards, creation of symbols and parts. Creation of basic legal survey plans, subdivision and area calculations, fitting house layout to lots with set back requirements and an introduction to 3D modeling and contour plans.

Upon completion of this course the student should be confident in using Microsurvey for standard coordinate geometry calculations and be able to draft basic legal survey plans to industry standards.

Course Content:
- Review of scales, layers, line configuration, menu structure, defaults

Coordinate Input Traversing
- Field note entry, ASCII input and export, data collector interface, traverse and side shots
- Compass rule adjustment

COGO Functions
- Inversing, Brg-Brg, Dist-Dist, Brg-Dist intersections, area computations

CAD Functions
- Linework, symbols, block creation and insertion, labeling
- Area computations and subdivision of polygons

Advance Functions
- Building layout calculations, embedding drawing commands into field surveys, creation of drawing templates

Term Project
- Subdivision design project in class

3 D Capabilities
- Creation of TIN model and contouring

Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

- Import and export ASCII data files
- Import and export microsurvey, AutoCAD and DXF drawing files
- Enter traverse and adjust traverse data
- Fit objects within defined setbacks (house foundation setbacks)
- Create drawing templates with standard line types and text heights
- Utilize COGO capabilities of Microsurvey
- Utilize the 2D drawing capabilities of Microsurvey
- Demonstrate understanding of the potential of Microsurvey’s 3D capabilities
- Demonstrate field to finish surveying by importing data collected with embedded drawing codes
- Produce a basic legal survey plan to Land Title Office Standards

- All assignments completed in class time or at due time

- An individual CAD project must be successfully completed

Assignments: Late assignments, lab reports or projects will not be accepted for marking. Assignments must be done on an individual basis unless otherwise specified by the instructor.

Makeup Tests, Exams or Quizzes: There will be no makeup tests, exams or quizzes. If you miss a test, exam or quiz, you will receive zero marks. Exceptions may be made for documented medical reasons or extenuating circumstances. In such a case, it is the responsibility of the student to inform the instructor immediately.

Ethics: NLC assumes that all students attending the institution will follow a high standard of ethics. Incidents of cheating or plagiarism may, therefore, result in a grade of zero for the assignment, quiz, test, exam, or project for all parties involved and/or expulsion from the course.

Illness: A doctor’s note is required for any illness causing you to miss assignments, quizzes, tests, projects, or exam. At the discretion of the instructor, you may complete the work missed or have the work prorated.

Attempts: Students must successfully complete a course within a maximum of three attempts at the course. Students with two attempts in a single course will be allowed to repeat the course only upon special written permission from the Dean. Students who have not successfully completed a course within three attempts will not be eligible to graduate from the appropriate program.
