About the NLCSA and your student Council Branches

The NLCSA is the regional governing body serving Northern Lights College students. It consists of the elected president & vice-presidents from each local Student Council Branch. This board meets three to four times per year (plus the Annual General Meeting). Members of the NLCSA are referred to as directors.

The student council branches consist of elected officials and unelected members from the student population. Council officials are established each year by a formal nomination and election process. The four elected officers’ positions available for nominations are: president, vice president, treasurer & secretary.

Student council branches may be formed at each NLC location: Dawson Creek, Fort St. John, Chetwynd, Fort Nelson, Tumbler Ridge, Atlin, Dease Lake, and online. Membership to a branch is based on your home campus at the time of course registration.

NLCSA — What they do:

  • Administer funds to local student councils through the student association fees collected to host activities and events.

  • Provide student emergency funding, matched by the provincial government and administered by the NLC Foundation.

  • Provide funding to the NLC Student Association and Council award. There are six awards of $200 each. They are administered by the NLC Foundation.

  • Support other provincial student councils’ campaigns if they feel it is warranted.

  • For more information see the: NLCSA Bylaws.

Student Council Branches — What they do:

  • Organize activities and events on and off campus.

  • Address concerns of students on their campus to create awareness of student needs.

  • Collaborate with Indigenous Education & International Educations departments, as needed.

  • For more information see the: NLC Students’ Association Student Council job descriptions.

All officials are guided throughout the year by a staff representative at their local campus. There are templates in place to help facilitate the process. You will learn how to run board meetings and develop leadership skills. Being on student council is a fun and rewarding experience.
