# Explore the North

Discover what makes Northern BC amazing

If you’re not already from here, you may not know why the region of Northern BC is so special. Brimming with small-town kindness, it’s a peaceful but adventurous place to live, learn, and play.

Here’s your quick guide to our incredible region with local insights and suggestions to explore while you’re attending NLC.

Making your way here

Our main campuses are located in the Peace River region of northeastern BC. The region is easily accessible from major BC and Alberta highways, or via local airports with multiple daily flights from Vancouver and Calgary.

Getting around Northern British Columbia

You can explore the incredible views or travel to other campuses using Bus the North — a bus service offering safe travel to communities all across Northern British Columbia.

Understand the history

Northern Lights College serves the northern third of the province of British Columbia. Our region covers approximately 325,000 square kilometres and shares a border with the province of Alberta and the Yukon territory.

These are the traditional lands of the Cree, Dene, Dunne-Za, Kaska, Saulteau, Tse’khene, Tahltan, and Tlingit people. To protect these lands, several First Nations signed Treaty 8 in the early 20th century.

Today, approximately 7% of the region’s population are Indigenous peoples. At NLC, we recognize that we are guests in this territory and seek to uphold values that honour and respect these storied lands.
