FORT ST. JOHN – Approximately 100 grade 10-12 students from School District 60 had the opportunity to experience NLC on Oct. 27 at the Fort St. John Campus of Northern Lights College.
The annual Experience NLC event allows secondary school students and members of the public to find out what it would be like to be a College student by participating in programs or courses offered at NLC.
Mark Sutherland, a professional chuck wagon racer and public speaker from EnCana, opened the day by providing those in attendance with some thoughts on the importance of education.
“You have choices, but if you don’t have an education, doors close. You have to stay focused on this ultimate goal of getting an education,” Sutherland said. “Education helps improve your life. And when you have an education, no one can take it away from you.”
Participants were able to sit in on four sessions during the day, learning about program areas and participating in hands-on activities.
Featured courses and programs included: Geomatics, Health Care, Early Childhood Education and Care, Oil and Gas Field Operator, Power Engineering and Gas Processing, Business Management, English, Psychology, Automotive Service Technician, Industrial Instrumentation, Wind Turbine Maintenance, Social Services Worker Diploma, Chemistry, Electrician, History, Applied Business Technology and Heavy Duty/Commercial Transport Technician.
A number of students who participated in the event are part of School District 60’s Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program. AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
NLC will be hosting Experience NLC at the Dawson Creek Campus on Wednesday, Nov. 10 for students in School District 59.
