Soup and bannock funds refurbished Nawican drum

On , In College News

Northern Lights College presented a cheque and a drum to the Nawican Bergeron Youth and Culture Centre recently.

Helen Knott, Director of Indigenous Education, and Bruce McKay, Indigenous Relations Coordinator, presented a cheque for $861—funds raised from the sale of soup and bannock at the Dawson Creek Indigenous Gathering Space over the course of the 2021–22 academic year. The funds covered the cost to repair the Nawican’s powwow drum, which needed the elk hide replaced.

The drum, which has been at the Indigenous Gathering Space since last September, will now be stored at the Nawican Bergeron Youth and Culture Centre, with a portable stand built by NLC carpentry instructor, Stephen Janssen.
