Truth and Reconciliation Week at Northern Lights College

On , In College News, Reconciliation

Northern Lights College, along with our Indigenous Education department, is marking the week of September 26–30 as Truth and Reconciliation Week.

Helen Knott, Director of Indigenous Education at NLC, encourages participation in the week’s events to raise awareness and promote healing.

“So many Indigenous people have felt, and continue to feel, the impacts of Residential schools within our families and communities. I have residential school survivors within my family, and I know how important it is for continued awareness efforts to be made,” she says. “Here at the Northern Lights College, we invite people to take part in the Truth and Reconciliation Week’s events and ask you to be willing to step out of your comfort zone and take the opportunity to learn, listen, and step into awareness.”

The week will start by having lunch, and listening to our special guest—local Indigenous storyteller and motivational speaker, Earl Lambert.

On Tuesday, there will be drop-in Orange Shirt Day pin creation, and on Wednesday we will hold a tea and Bannock and a visit with local Elders. These events will be held in the Fort St. John and Dawson Creek Gathering Spaces.

The week wraps up on Thursday with screenings of The Scattering of Man, a documentary about the displacement of the Tsay Keh Dene people due to the flooding of their traditional lands by the WAC Bennett Dam.
