Northern Lights College (NLC) students came out on top at the regional Skills Canada competition last month and are now on their way to the provincial event in Abbotsford.

The Skills Canada program encourages youth to get into trades. Participants are given a specific task to complete in their respective field within a specific timeframe and are graded on how well they did it.

NLC has six students going to provincials: Laura Kohan will compete in aerospace; Ryan Buerge in carpentry; Tyson Nielson in electrical wiring; Kaylea Mould in esthetics; Jasmeet Kaur in hairstyling; and Samuel Sawatsky in welding.

“I’m super excited and nervous, but looking forward to the opportunity to go there, I think it will be really beneficial to see all the other students across the British Columbia,” says Kaylea.

To have such a turnout after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic is exciting to see, according to NLC Dean of Trades and Apprenticeships, Leo Manning.

“Skills is such a great opportunity to showcase our regional talent and offerings as a post-secondary, Northern Lights College staff and students are so excited to participate and share their stories and of course the experience and successes are growth for an entire lifetime journey in trades excellence,” he says.

Team NLC is flying down with Aircraft Maintenance instructor Dan Jaeger, who will also be serving as a judge in the competition.

Good luck, Team NLC!
