Northern Lights College is more than a place to learn — it’s a place to grow. In our “alumni among us” series, we celebrate the incredible individuals who began their journeys as students here, and now help shape the future as NLC employees, board members, and members of our community. Their stories are full of inspiration, connection, and the deep sense of community that makes NLC special.
From student to staff: a round-trip journey at Northern Lights College
When you walk the halls of NLC, you’ll find people with diverse stories. Sometimes, those stories have come full circle. That’s exactly the case for Coline Casey, Manager of Student Recruitment who graduated from NLC, not just once, but twice!
From dual graduate to Student Recruiter
Coline first walked through the doors of NLC in 2013, as a student in the Applied Business Technology (ABT) program. Nearly a decade and two successful home businesses later, she returned to complete the Business Management program in 2022.
Coline not only completed her program, she earned double honours as Valedictorian and the recipient of the Lieutenant Governor’s award for Inclusion, Diplomacy, and Reconciliation.
After successfully completing her program, she applied for and was hired as a student recruiter. Coline shone in her role, connecting with all kinds of students and making connections throughout NLC’s surrounding communities. This helped pave the way for her current position as the very first Manager of Student Recruitment.

Her academic path prepared her for her role in more ways than one. “Besides the educational background, I had direct student experience,” she said. “I could appreciate the customer’s point of view, which made me very effective in serving the recruiter position and department.”
A deep connection to community
While many are drawn to careers at NLC for professional development, Coline’s inspiration to become an employee was rooted in something deeper. “NLC helped me not only with education, but with cultural connection,” she shared. “I liked the idea of helping others discover themselves, grow, and learn through NLC.”
This connection continues to fuel her passion every day. “[My favourite part of working here is] the staff,” she explains. “They’re positive and passionate and really care about the students. Working together to meet those needs is a fulfilling experience.”
The power of cultural connection

As both a student and a staff member, one thing has consistently stood out for Coline: NLC’s ongoing commitment to cultural connection and support for Indigenous students. A standout memory from her time as a student was taking a Cultural Connections course during COVID.
“I’m so glad I did that. It was a unique experience, and I was able to connect with other students from different programs,” she recalled.
Coline is also deeply connected to the Indigenous Education department, contributing to cultural activities as well as participating in drumming and singing.
From the classroom to the bigger picture
Now on the staff side, Coline says her perspective on the college has evolved.
“I have a better appreciation for the post-secondary industry’s processes and why things are done the way they are.”
She’s come to value the collaborative spirit that exists among staff, adding, “I’m grateful that I work at a place I can feel good about going to every day.”
One mentor who made a lasting impression is Aviva Jones.
“[She] is an absolute gem,” said Coline. “She was one of my favourite instructors who brought real-world experience and expertise to the classroom. I’ve still reached out to her on occasion for advice.”
Advice for future students
Looking ahead, Coline offers this advice to current students who might be considering a future in post-secondary work: “The whole journey can be like a long interview.”
It’s a reminder that every experience — from classroom to community — helps build the foundation for what’s next.
When asked why someone should choose NLC, Coline doesn’t hesitate.
“We’re affordable, friendly, and have smaller class sizes for a more direct and fulsome learning experience. We’re ready to serve the northern BC region — and beyond.”
From student to staff, and from learner to leader, Coline is a true reflection of what it means to be part of the NLC community: rooted in connection, driven by purpose, and always looking forward.
