Tushar Verma’s dream became a reality, thanks to his dedication to education. Before moving to Canada from India, he worked as an Insolvency and Bankruptcy Lawyer. He dreamed of moving to another country to learn about their laws.

He soon landed in Fort St. John, a city that offered a sense of community and a local college, which led him to enroll in the Northern Lights College (NLC) Diploma of Criminology program.

“NLC offered a variety of courses that suited my purpose for coming to Canada,” he said “NLC has a strong reputation in the region, especially for programs that are closely aligned with local industry needs.”

At NLC, Tushar completed more research-based learning assignments, through case studies, which was not widely available in India.

“NLC laid the foundation for the legal education I needed to take the first step toward my professional goals in Canada,” he said “The research-based learning approach significantly improved my ability to write reports, articles, and analytical papers.”

After gaining a solid foundation at NLC, Tushar was prepared to tackle his next educational challenge, and continue his professional growth by pursuing a Master’s Degree in law at York University.

After spending time in Ontario, Tushar returned to Fort St. John, as he wanted to give back to the community that gave so much to him. He now works at the Fort St. John Co-operative Association as a Business Support Specialist.

“Looking back, I’m truly grateful for the experience I had at NLC. It was an important chapter in my journey, both academically and personally,” he said. “The supportive learning environment and practical approach to education helped me build confidence and prepare for the next stages of my career.”

When asked if he had any advice for current students or students thinking about attending Northern Lights College, he made it clear it is the place to start.

“NLC is an excellent foundation for anything you want to pursue in Canada,” he said.

When asked what being a Northern Lights College Alumni meant to him, Tushar had positive feedback.

“Being an NLC alumni means being part of a community that helped shape both my academic journey and personal growth.”

Every student who learns at NLC has the potential to stay here or come back — contributing their knowledge to the people and places that make northern BC thrive.

Tushar Verma is proof that if you have a dream and determination, you can start your path to a brighter future right here.
