Garden design is a creative art that combines aesthetic design, resilience to weather and climate change, form and function. In this course, we will explore the basics of garden design, including unity, proportions, color, texture, structure, function, and “do’s and don’ts”.

You will learn a brief history of garden design trends and common theories. We discuss how the texture and color of plants, bloom season, and seasonal structural interest create year-round gardens. You will learn the concept of garden “rooms” and how transition zones create balance and focus. You will learn the general rules of plant groupings, how to create ease of maintenance, designing plant health, weed control, ecological function, and why your personal touch is always important in garden design.
